Between the months of December and April, visitors and residents in San Diego have a unique opportunity to see the migration of California gray whales as they migrate from Alaska to the warmer water of California.

Every winter the whales come within miles of the San Diego coast on their 5,000-mile migration. This trip is the longest annual migration done by any mammal. During the peak times, there are as many as 200 whales per day that can be scene from San Diego coastline.

The Birch Aquarium at Scripps celebrates this season by offering educational activities and whale exhibits. Starting December 18, day excursions are offered for those who want to see the whales while sailing on a yacht.
