Famed Sandcastle Competition ends

The event committee for the U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition that is held annually at Imperial Beach announced that the competition will be ending due to fundraising issues.

The competition has happened every year for the past 31 years attracting tourists and thousands of people from the San Diego community. The competition’s Board of Directors cited that increasing costs and an inability to find sponsors were the reasons for ending the event.

The competition is run solely by volunteers, and in recent years, there has been a decline in volunteers and committee members due to the economy.

Chairperson Debbie Longley stated, “The board would like to express our deepest gratitude and thanks to everyone’s hard work and support over the years. As one of the longest-running events in San Diego County, Sandcastle touched the lives of many people and created fond memories for all of us.”
