San Diego Pride Celebrates 40 Years

Thousands are expected to gather for the San Diego Pride’s 40th anniversary, which celebrates the heritage begun by an incident on June 28, 1969 at the Stonewall Inn in New York City when patrons made a stand against police harassment, the SDGLN reported on July 17.

Emmy-nominated star of the Netflix show Orange is the New Black Laverne Cox, a transgender woman, will be this year’s keynote speaker. Other notable speakers are community leaders Toni Atkins, Speaker of the California Assembly; San Diego city council president Todd Gloria; and local activist and gay rights advocate Nicole Murray-Ramirez.

This year’s San Diego LGBTQ Pride Parade will transpire on Saturday, July 19 and is expected to involve the participation of 300,000 people from contingents of community organizations, local businesses, and others to express their solidarity with the members of the LGBTQ community.
