San Diego Fleet Week to commence

The annual Fleet Week, a celebration for the United States Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard is currently underway in San Diego, the San Diego Military News reported on September 11.

The event is not aptly named; festivities actually take place from August 30 to November 21. The Coronado Speed Festival, to take place on September 20-21, will feature The Race at the Base, which race aficionados and car enthusiasts alike can enjoy. The race will occur at the Naval Air Station North Island.

That same day, the Navy opens house for ship tours. The Marines, on the other hand, will host a 3-mile obstacle course in which drill sergeants will realistically shout at you on September 27. The idea is to give civilians a fun glimpse at military life.

This Saturday at Mission Beach: surfer Shaun Tomson to catch 100 waves

This Saturday, September 20, South African surfing legend Shaun Tomson will suit up and hit Mission Beach’s beautiful waters with a special goal in mind.

The former world surfing champion plans to ride 100 waves in at least 12 hours. Tomson put together this event to raise money for the non-profit organization Boys to Men, a group created to help lead at-risk teenage boys in a positive direction.

All surfers are welcome to participate in this event and raise $1,000 each. The goal for everyone planning to participate, including Tomson, is to catch 100 waves, even if it means being out in the surf for over 10 hours.

“Please come down to the beach. It’s going to be an awesome day,” says Tomson.
