Adaptive Surfing Championship at La Jolla Shores, Sept. 24-27

Located a short twenty minutes from South Mission Beach, La Jolla is set to host the first World Adaptive Surfing Championship hosted by the International Surfing Association from Sept. 24 through Sept. 27.

The ISA expects over 60 competitors from 18 countries to attend the event for surfers with disabilities. ISA president Fernando Aguerra has high hopes for this event, saying he want it to become “A pilgrimage, so to speak, for the challenged community.” The ISA has partnered with the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF), also based out of La Jolla, which has organized an adaptive surf clinic for children as part of their annual Triathlon Challenge in the past.

The CAF has provided over thirty travel grants for athletes and will offer equipment to any participants who do not have their own. Senior director of development for CAF, Nancy Reynolds, added that the organization intends to grant additional stipends to companies who manufacture surf boards and wet-suits that meet the individual needs of competitors.

The championship will be free for anyone to watch, and will offer a number of events, clinics, and presentations for visitors to enjoy. For more information, visit Don’t forget, if you need a place to stay in Mission Beach, you can rent one of our condominiums.

Study favors bayfront convention center expansion in San Diego

A new study stated that San Diego, California will gain much larger profits if its convention center is expanded on the waterfront instead of on a campus-like site a few blocks away to the northeast on land, findings that have been echoed by backers of this plan. This study – valued at $90,000 – was conducted by advisory and planning firm Conventions, Sports & Leisure International and formally issued last Monday, August 31.

The study, however, did not address issues such as the exact location of the expansion or the possibility of such an expansion happening in the first place.
