San Diego Fleet Week to showcase ships, aircraft

San Diego Fleet Week’s military tribute honors the brave men and women who defend the land of the free.

The Fleet Week Sea & Air Parade is coming back to San Diego, California to enliven the festivities with the best of military action. The event will commence with a parade on Saturday, September 10 at Shelter Island and will continue from noon until 2:00 p.m.

Ships from the Coast Guard and Canadian Navy, SEAL amphibious landing craft, Navy aircraft fly-overs, and the Marine F-35 fighter jet will also grace the event. In addition, the Coronado Speed Festival, which showcases auto races on a U.S. Navy runway, is set to happen on Saturday and Sunday.

San Diego bike group seeks funding from city council

The San Diego County Bicycle Coalition announced the return of its CicloSDias event, according to an article of KPBS. CicloSDias is scheduled for October 30, 2016 in North Park and City Heights in San Diego, California.

To introduce the event, San Diego County Bicycle Coalition executive director Andy Hanshaw says, “The Bike Coalition was the lead organizer on all these events and still is.” Hanshaw said the city of San Diego has yet to donate event money or give a discount on the usual event fees, noting, “I don’t want to say they haven’t been supportive, because they have been in helping us figure out ways to do this. But as a partner moving forward, we’d love to have the mayor’s office on down embrace this as more of a strategy, if you will, for their own climate goals.”

The city’s Climate Action Plan seeks to have the city cut greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2035 by encouraging San Diego residents to commute to work by biking, walking, or public transportation instead of driving their own vehicles.

San Diego changes policy on city-owned tickets to Petco Park, Qualcomm shows

The San Diego City Council in California last Tuesday, August 2 changed its distribution policy regarding city-owned tickets for events to baseball parks Petco Park and Qualcomm Stadium in a bid to promote participation.

San Diego gets 26 seats to events at Petco Park at Qualcomm Stadium on a normal basis. However, in 2015, the city seats were not used in 11 events because officials did not participate in said events, which they were allowed to do under the current policy.

The new policy assigns the responsibility of distributing the tickets in the office of the council president instead of with individual council members; gives priority for receiving tickets to non-profit organizations; restricts recipients to one event every six months; increases the use of the tickets by San Diego municipal workers under an employee reward program.

Recipients will be mandated to sign a code-of-conduct form that will be reflective of stadium behavioral regulations.

San Diego’s Ethics Commission executive director, Stacey Fulhorst, said the changes meet the guidelines of the bi-partisan California Fair Political Practices Commission, although there are critics who say the event tickets shouldn’t be used for political benefits.
