Today, the Dalai Lama will visit the San Diego State University campus in order to deliver another part of his dialogue. He was also able to attend a ceremony in which he was honored at the University of San Diego. He was given the USD Medal of Peace. He informed the students at the universities that they need to focus on environmentalism instead of materialism.

The 76-year-old presented his speech inside a university basketball arena, in which 4,000 people were in attendance. The Dalai Lama will spend a total of five days in the state of California, spreading his message across the state.

But, it is less likely to see a whale less than 40 yards from the shoreline. Yesterday evening, a gray whale that was determined to be a baby by it’s small size, between eight and 12-feet, was spotted in a shallow area of Mission Beach. The whale was noticed near the lifeguard Tower 17, and stayed stationary for about an hour.

Lifeguards alerted Sea World, just in case the whale was unable to return to sea on it’s own and required assistance. Not too far away from the initial whale spotting was another spotting, this one believed to be the young whale’s mother. After the baby whale was done playing in the shallow area, it returned to deeper parts of the ocean to rejoin it’s mother.

An authorization of $185,000 for repairs was granted, and a contractor just agreed to the work. That was the last step needed in order to reopen the indoor pool at Belmont Park to the public. Although, the money for the repairs will fix the short-term problems, an additional $1 million is necessary in order to keep the pool up and running.

The pool will be open today between the hours of 5 a.m. and 10 p.m. for individuals who are members of the athletic club.
